Linocut Blocks
Highest Grade Linoleum Used
Imported from Europe, this is the finest linoleum available to printmakers. Crisp, sharp cuts with no crumbling edges are the hallmark of this material. The 1/8" thick premium German linoleum is permanently bonded to a high quality wooden substrate chosen for its uniform thickness. The blocks themselves are created here in Portland to the highest manufacturing standards.
These 5/8" high blocks are etching press friendly, and with a little shimming, they are letterpress friendly too. The low profile, substantial weight, and rigidity of each block give you great control while cutting and hand burnishing. The pre-sanded surface is ready for immediate use.
India ink, permanent felt pens, chalk, and carbon or transfer paper can all be used to fix the image on the block.
Linocut blocks are easily carved with any of McClain's woodblock cutting tools.
Use with Oil or Water Based Inks
When using oil based inks, the blocks will be unaffected
by common solvents. When using water based inks,
waterproof the wooden substrate (the block under the
linoleum) with varnish. Spar varnish works well. To
prevent warping, blocks should be cleaned and stored
flat in a dry place.
